Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

Marshmallow is a perennial herb indigenous to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, which is used as a medicinal plant and ornamental plant. This use is reflected in the name of the genus, which comes from the Greek ἄλθειν (althein), meaning “to heal”. The ancient Greeks used it both as a medicine and as a decoration for graves.

Marshmallow is used today by herbalists to treat problems of the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, this herb is also used for dry cough, inflammation of the lining of the stomach, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, constipation, urinary tract inflammation and stones in the urinary tract. At last, marshmallow root is applied to the skin as an ingredient in ointments for chapped skin as well as for pain and swelling.

The root is sometimes used as flavoring in the making of a Middle Eastern snack called halva. Marshmallow is mainly used as a decoction or as a poultice for its beneficial properties.
