Description
Melilot / Sweet Clover (Melilotus Officinalis)
Melilot is native to Europe and Asia; however, nowadays it can grow worldwide. It is known since ancient times. Dioscorides and Pliny used the dried leaves of the plant as an effective insect repellent. In ancient Greece melilot was used in patches for the elimination of toxins and reducing swellings.
This herb can act as emollient, aromatic, antispasmodic, antithrombotic and diuretic. In modern herbal medicine, sweet clover is used against bronchial catarrh and eyewash, because it is astringent and anti-inflammatory. Furthermore, sweet clover is used to treat varicose veins, swelling of the limbs and all forms of spider veins. It can be used externally as a poultice on wounds, swellings and pimples. The main active ingredient of this herb is coumarin.
Melitot is not used in cooking. It is used for its beneficial properties, but it does not replace medicines in no case. Always consult your doctor.
